Let’s talk about Nina: S1

I don’t like Nina and the only value I can see in her is purely comedic, but I can’t really deny or ignore what the show seems to be trying to do with her (especially after the last episode). Soooo, let’s talk about Nina. :D In this post, Nina in S1. Keep in mind that I am pretty much pro-Milly/anti-Nina and make no effort to hide this. Also, this shit is long. Not quite “y so hapi??//” length, but nearly there.
S1 03
Shirley finds something for her (a data chip with some experiment info on it) for her in the club house in this episode. If we follow the clues given to us by the later part of S1 and R2, then this possibly had her uranium experiment data on it. If Shirley had stepped on this shit instead of finding it, maybe FLEIA wouldn’t even exist!
S1 03.25 - Picture Drama
In the picture drama, we discover that Milly and Nina grew up together because of their grandparents. Nina shows self-blame here. She acts apologetic to Milly and apologizes for her grandfather’s failures with KnightMare Frame’s, and attributes it to why Milly’s grandfather’s company is dead. Milly tells her that it’s her grandfather’s own fault for the fuck ups.
S1 06
We find out that Nina doesn’t like 11’s. Before episode 8, I figured she was afraid of Suzaku because of his relation to the Clovis murder thing. There’s something in this episode besides her fear of 11’s: Nina, starting with this episode, is shown to be fairly partial to Nunnally (or just not really be bothered by her, maybe). Thinking on R2 18… that’s really… kinda… ouch.
S1 07
Nina has a random 5sec appearance in this episode when she’s at her computer typing, and she exclaims, “It split?” This is actually more important-ish than it seems. She was talking about her uranium crap here and splitting the uranium atoms, but her science experiment stuff gets dropped until Lloyd shows up later in favor of her tablefucking.
S1 08
What Milly says at the beginning of the episode is like the only clue we’ve gotten about why she doesn’t like 11’s. Some kids went into the ghetto and Nina got left behind. Apparently it was dark out when she was left behind, as she flinched when the train went into the dark tunnel. Her totally random Euphy love begins with. It’s truly mystifying. Milly has been friends with her since childhood and has been trying to help her and “include her” in stuff the whole fucking time. Then Euphy comes along and helps her for one day in her life, and this makes Milly some irrelevant random bitch or what?
S1 08 Tangent - What happened to Nina in the ghetto before that makes her fear 11’s?
The impression I get, in general, is that Nina has always been the quiet nerdy girl. The other kids might have dragged her along on purpose to ditch her as a prank. I think it’s possible that Milly was among the kids who took Nina into the ghetto, thus also one of the ones who left her there, and part of the reason why she cares so much about Nina is that she feels guilty for leaving her there. One of the picture drama’s says that they’ve been childhood friends and that makes me doubt that Milly might’ve left her there on purpose, so if Milly left her there it was some accident or [something].
On IRC before, we concluded she might have been raped in the ghetto which could explain her screaming reaction when an 11 touches her. On the other hand, something like, “she was raped” seems like a fairly important/stand out detail to be left out from the story, so ehhh. Also, as an alternate explanation for her reaction to scream, Nina does have overblown reactions.
Nina’s feelings for 11’s from the start of the series until Euphy dies seems to be fear, after Euphy dies it becomes hate.
S1 10
I’m going to be honest about gg’s ver of 10: Yuurei mistranslated that line where Lelouch is talking about Nina and his Physics Teacher. Lelouch’s probability calculations were wrong, so he wants to ask Nina or the Physics Teacher to explain to him a better theory. Yuurei translated this in past tense, so it sounds like he might have Geassed Nina and/or the Physics Teacher to do the calculations for him.
Anyway, during the ep, Nina and Milly are shown at school. We learn that Nina considered Euphy standing up for her at the hotel to be “fate”, and she wants to meet with her because of that. Milly tries to reality check her, asking her what kind of fate this is for her to be a commoner wanting to meet with a princess. Nina claims she just wants to meet with her to say thanks, since she didn’t get to back at the hotel, but both girls are commoners and don’t have the authority or power to do this.
S1 10 Tangent - Is Milly hating on her dreams or what
Milly is kind of putting her down in 10. “Holy shit we can’t do that we’re just commoners, what kind of status do you think *I* even have? fff”. She’s touchy with status herself because of her family (putting her into an arranged marriage and everything). Since Nina’s tunnel vision later goes to thinking Euphy is the most awesome shit ever, Milly is almost unknowingly villainizing herself here to Nina’s little fucked up head.
S1 12
TABLEFUCKING.
S1 14
Nina’s school buds tell Rivalz that people with IMPURE THOUGHTS should not be allowed to meet Euphemia. Nina shows some, “I don’t think I’m all well in the head” here, as she repeats the word “impure”, and even proposed the idea of wanting to meet Euphy with some hesitation and/or embarrassment. It’s like she thinks her friends know she’s been masturbating to her picture or something. The only one who “caught” her was Nunnally, and she’s blind! No sweat. She shows some doubt her. After all, if she didn’t have any doubt about her actions or her “obsession” with Euphy, I guess she’d have nothing to fear here, eh? You can also see this as general nervousness since she doesn’t really speak much, but I think the reaction to the word impure says otherwise.
S1 17
STOP THE PRESSES NINA WAS LATE FOR ART CLASS. D::::
S1 18
Nina shows some conflicting feelings: Her beloved (?) Euphemia-SAMA has selected some 11 to be her Knight. Baaaw. She doesn’t show up at his celebratory party and sticks to her computer, screwing around with uranium when suddenly, LLOYD APPEARS and Nina then like… speaks the longest she’s ever spoken in the series. She looks extremely pleased that someone who “gets” what she’s doing is there. Apparently her and Lloyd have a long talk offscreen in which Lloyd tells her that Special Envoy is going to Shikine Island, so the only reason why 18-19 can occur is because Nina is leaking their schedule on the internet. Even if you hate her, you must admit that some pretty important shit happened thanks to her in this episode.
S1 18 Tangent - Nina and other people
If you take into account her sudden change in personality after Lloyd starts talking to her, you can make some assumptions about her with other people. Before this scene with Lloyd, Nina never really showed much enthusiasm when she speaks.
One interpretation is that, it’s not that she’s naturally quiet, it’s that she looks down on other people. “They’re stupid, they don’t understand my science shit.” However, she can’t speak up against them because she feels she’s a useless commoner girl. She’s quiet because she doesn’t fit in with that crowd. Another interpretation is that Nina is just fucking lonely. “I’m going to talk a wall of tl;dr to him because he’s fucking listening to me. He notices me, he pays attention to me.”
I’m kind of leaning towards a little of both. Her comments in R2 later indicate that she looked down on the school bunch, or she came to look down on them, yet because she distanced herself from them by looking down on them, she thus made herself lonely.

S1 20
Lloyd told Nina he’d give her uranium or something for her to screw around with, and she wants to go pick it up, but she also has to go to art museum and borrow some outdoor booths. Conveniently, Euphy is there, so Nina throws away logic and runs out in front of her limo.
Then Nina and Euphy have some girl chat. I agree with Euphy’s self-assessment that she’s useless. The way the scene by the fireplace reads is two dumb girls telling each other they’re awesome to cheer each other up.
S1 21
Nina is in a good mood due to yesterday’s heart2heart with Euphy! Then she finds out that Euphy is at school and somehow believes she can help her escape during the shitstorm after her magic hat disguise blows away! …then she goes bug eyed as Euphy declares that Japanese can be Japanese in the space around Mt. Fuji.
S1 22
Nina humps Euphy’s clothing and baaaw’s about the idea of being okay with 11’s. Euphy is obviously OKAY WITH 11’s, she’s picked Suzaku as her Knight and now she’s got the Special Zone shit. Nina recognizes this too. Yet this is kind of important because she later… uh… forgets this or something.

S1 23
Euphy is dead -> Ugly distorted face that’s wonderful only for Photoshop -> MUST MAKE BOMB.
Milly goes to check on Nina in Ganymede’s storing area, and we don’t really see the end of this scene, but I suppose Milly didn’t want to try and physically move her?
After Euphy’s death in 23, Nina gained a case of tunnel vision. She focused in on Zero, wanting to kill him and the Black Knights, etc, and pretty ignored everyone and everything else. She now hates 11’s. Before it was fear, now it’s hate since the bandwagon leader of the 11’s, Zero, has killed her beloved.
Despite realizing an episode ago that Euphy accepted 11’s, Nina doesn’t seem to give a shit anymore. Euphy is dead, and the one who killed her, Zero, is all that matters. She completely ignores that Euphy accepted them, and despite being such a “fan” of Euphy, she doesn’t note how out of character this is for Euphy.
S1 24
Nina thinks her bomb is finished…
S1 25
…so she goes up to the surface with it and a detonator, and honestly wants to blow up all of her classmates, plus other folks such as the Professor who gave her the uranium.
S1 and R2 Transition (Based on R2 09 and other assumptions)
Nina finally snaps during the Black Rebellion, pushes the detonator for no apparent reason, no knowledge of whether Zero is there or not. Her faith in Lloyd and Milly is shattered here, as she realizes they’re against her idea to kill everyone. In her mind, Euphy is still the ultimate awesome, and somehow her justification for everything. Trying to fill in the blanks of what happened afterward, she was forced on board Avalon and taken back to the momeland with everyone else. There, Lloyd introduced her to Schneizel. (Or told him about her. Whatever.)
Nina and Milly
Nina apparently doesn’t like Milly that much! From the viewers PoV, this is dumb. Perhaps Nina looks at their friendship as the older sibling being forced to take their younger sibling along, against the older sibling’s will? And then the older sibling’s friends all ask, “Why’d you take them?” and the older one replies, “Mom made me”. The rest of the student council and people in general really don’t seem to mind Nina being around at all. At worst, the feeling can be described as neutral.
There’s never been any clue or indication that Milly doesn’t give a shit about her. If Milly didn’t really care about her, then saying that their “friendship” consists of Milly looking down on her would be justified, but I don’t think it’s been presented that way at all. If anything it’s been presented to be the reverse.
The main reason why Nina pisses me off so much isn’t because she’s an “ugly racist bitch” or whatever the fuck people rant about her physically being, it’s because Milly and her grow up together, Milly shows that she cares about her, Nina totally ignores Milly’s efforts in favor of Euphy, a girl she doesn’t fucking know, and god damn do I hate Euphy too. Oh well. A delusional princess and a delusional ugly racist bitch. Indeed Nina, that is fate. Hurf durf.
S1 - Summarized
[??] Nina becomes fearful of 11’s after being left in the ghetto by herself. (Presumably at night.)
[3.25] Milly and Nina are childhood friends. Nina blames her grandfather as a form of apology to Milly.
[8, 12] After Euphy defends her, Nina becomes totally obsessed and thinks impure thoughts about Euphy.
[18] Nina is presented as being a quiet nerd girl, hesitant to speak, until Lloyd shows interest in what she’s doing. Finding someone with common interests, she opens up to him, and even looks happy that someone understands what she’s doing.
[21] After meeting with Euphy, Nina is once again shown to be an elated mood similar to when Lloyd spoke to her about uranium splitting.
[23] After Euphy dies, Nina becomes totally obsessed with wanting to kill Zero, and her fear of 11’s transforms into hate. This outweighs everything else.
[23] Despite being some genius scientist, Nina shows she lacks brain power for anything but explosive shit. She somehow ignores that Euphy has gone completely out of character, and that she was supportive of 11’s one minute before killing them the next.
[25] Nina is apparently okay with wanting to blow up the Tokyo Settlement.
“Let’s talk about Nina: S1″ over. Next part about R2 coming after I get over the shock that I wrote a wall of text about Nina.
tl;dr = Nina sucks

Good, good. You’re rly bored in ur wait for more Schneizel win coz clearly you could have made this longer by ranting abotu how she feels about Schneizel.
She looked down on people and she still feels a little out of place in the higher up society. But she seems to be okay with Schneizel taking her as his escort :P and also perfectly immodest about when he calls her a genius thought with the glasses she rly looked more like a fly.
Also, Kanon was nice to Milly and to Nina both XD.
*encourages you to write more walls to help this person procrastinate for exams* XD

Good read. Enjoyed I feel the same way about her character. Though, I have doubts if her subplot will get any type of closure.

Maybe you’ll hit this in part 2, but I think the fact that she cried when finding out about Shirley confirms that she doesn’t actually *hate* Milly or the rest of the Ashford crew, she just hated being the outcast, which is honestly part her fault and part their fault.
You’re probably spot on about the ‘older sibling taking younger sibling along’ part, though, Nina probably always felt like Milly was taking her along out of a sense of obligation, not because Milly actually cared for her, when the truth is that Milly actually does care because she has that whole big sisterly/motherly thing going on.
As far as her Euphie obsession… I think that Nina always saw herself as a weak person. Some people look to religion as a source of strength, so I suppose Nina used her idol-worship of Euphie for that (ref back to the whole ‘emotions can change the course of history’ thing in R2 11.) To an extent that might be why she clings to it as much as she does, because she feels like if she lets go of her obsession with her she’ll slip back into being who she was before.
I feel far too much pity for her and am far too interested in where they’re going to take her character to hate Nina, personally.

the whole racist thing we have to just chalk up as a lost cause, but yeah setting off the detonator (in black rebellion) which if it had gone off would have killed milly, a bunch of britannian civilians and no Zero is definitely grounds for EXTREME hatred.
And come on, they actually had to drop a bomb on people for her to figure out that bombs KILL people. Frankly this is one subplot the viewers could have done without.

While I’m not as big a fan of Milly as you are, yeah, Nina’s treatment of her after all the shit Milly’s done for her is pretty bullshit. There’s, really, very little to naturally like about the bitch, and thus the Nina getting punched pic is the reason why it’s the Ninanukes’s national flag -3-)b

Here’s the thing–relationships between people who grow up together can be pretty complicated. It’s not surprising that people respond differently to family (as Milly is effectively family to Nina, having grown up together) and to someone outside that. Terrible as it is, when family members help each other, it usually doesn’t seem as special because family are expected to do such things. Especially when you have the classic ‘big sibling required to drag younger, shy sibling along to things because younger sibling has trouble making friends’. Having observed this in RL, I can say the younger sibling pretty much always has some degree of resentment. (And the elder too).
Further, it seems pretty clear to me that Nina has a crush on Euphemia and you generally don’t get such things on people you’re raised with as family. (Ideally)
But, of course, Nina doesn’t really know Euphemia at all, so her knowledge of Euphemia is very superficial, thus leading to the whole ‘I will avenge you by betraying everything you ever stood for’ thing.

Totally agree, tablefucker is the kind of extra character they needed to basically put Spinzaku in the position of having to compromise his twisted ideals throughout R1 and R2. Euphy was Nina’s way of basically saddling all of her ideals about the world onto one person she’s barely met and idolizing her until her death, which she takes personally and has the excuse to go batshit and kill everyone.
