She’s rather typical moe character, and hardcore moe-fans don’t care about how well does it match style and theme of the show.
Actually, it becomes quite typical to introduce a love triangle with both tsundere and moe girls no matter what in order to please everyone. Looks like a number of people who are after story with enough common sense is negligeable, or so scriptwriters think :)

Macross is built from three things: Fighter planes that turn into robots, love triangles, and music. Very little else matters.
And Ranka, just as most everything else, matches the style and theme of the show PERFECTLY, because the theme is MACROSS.

Basically, I’m pretty tired of seeing idiot clutz in every other show. What is even more irritating, those moe characters who, according to natural and social selection, should either stay at the bottom or perish if they get involved into something dangerous, seem to thrive despite common sense.
When we’re talking about some high-school or ecchi series, it’s one story, but Macross seemed to be sci-fi show, and for science fiction such things are unforgivable. I have no problems with music or love triangles as they’re part of life and so can fit into any series, but I wish they kept the moe stuff away :)
